Tidal Love numbers of neutron stars

چکیده

For a variety of fully relativistic polytropic neutron star models we calculate the star’s tidal Love number k2. Most realistic equations of state for neutron stars can be approximated as a polytrope with an effective index n ≈ 0.5 − 1.0. The equilibrium stellar model is obtained by numerical integration of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkhov equations. We calculate the linear l = 2 static perturbations to the Schwarzschild spacetime following the method of Thorne and Campolattaro. Combining the perturbed Einstein equations into a single second order differential equation for the perturbation to the metric coefficient gtt, and matching the exterior solution to the asymptotic expansion of the metric in the star’s local asymptotic rest frame gives the Love number. Our results agree well with the Newtonian results in the weak field limit. The fully relativistic values differ from the Newtonian values by up to ∼ 24%. The Love number is potentially measurable in gravitational wave signals from inspiralling binary neutron stars. Subject headings: stars: neutron — equation of state — gravitation — relativity

Relativistic tidal properties of neutron stars

We study the various linear responses of neutron stars to external relativistic tidal fields. We focus on three different tidal responses, associated to three different tidal coefficients: (i) a gravito-electrictype coefficient Gμl = [length] 2l+1 measuring the l-order mass multipolar moment GMa1...al induced in a star by an external l-order gravito-electric tidal field Ga1...al ; (ii) a gravit...

Systematic parameter errors in inspiraling neutron star binaries.

The coalescence of two neutron stars is an important gravitational wave source for LIGO and other detectors. Numerous studies have considered the precision with which binary parameters (masses, spins, Love numbers) can be measured. Here I consider the accuracy with which these parameters can be determined in the presence of systematic errors due to waveform approximations. These approximations ...

Are neutron stars crushed? Gravitomagnetic tidal fields as a mechanism for binary-induced collapse

1550-7998=20 Numerical simulations of binary neutron stars by Wilson, Mathews, and Marronetti indicated that neutron stars that are stable in isolation can be made to collapse to black holes when placed in a binary. This claim was surprising as it ran counter to the Newtonian expectation that a neutron star in a binary should be more stable, not less. After correcting an error found by Flanagan...

Observable Signatures of General Relativistic Dynamics in Compact Binaries

The effects of general relativity (GR) in astrophysical systems are often difficult to calculate, but they can have important consequences for observables. This thesis considers the impact of previously-ignored GR effects in two different types of compact binary systems. The first is the coalescence of massive black holes in high-redshift galaxies. The gravitational waves (GWs) from these syste...
